Broadway Village
Rochester, NY
Partnering with a local housing first organization, this is a conceptual layout and master plan for a tiny house community for the houseless population of Rochester, NY. This plan offers full amenities and a range of housing options and services to allow a transitional solution to the local houseless population and a path to integrate back into the community.
The Community building offers on site social service offices, a conference/training room, as well as a community kitchen, dining, library, computer center, and living room. While the Facility Building offers full toilet, shower, and laundry facilities. Residents of Broadway Village would have full 24 hour access to all of the amenities available in these buildings.
The housing options available include Transitional Emergency Shelters (TES) as well as stand alone fully operational Tiny houses. The TES option offers a basic insulated and conditioned space with a bed, closet, and electricity, which allows a safe space for its occupants and their belongings. This also provides an address, which opens the doors to opportunities such as banking, job opportunities, and credit cards. These shelters provide a first step for our friends to get off the street and back on their feet. For those residents that are more established, or have been able to use the resources provided to become more established, there are stand alone TIny Houses available to rent at an entry level affordable price. The tiny house options allow for more independence and help establish a rental history for future housing needs as they transition to the greater Rochester community. As this is a pedestrian community, other amenities include a community garden, greenhouse, and bike shed to house the residents transportation needs.
